The second court session in the trial of the defendants accused of murdering photojournalist Zahra Kazemi was held on Saturday at Branch 1059 of the Tehran Criminal Court.
The Canadian and Dutch ambassadors and a representative from the British Embassy also attended the open court session. The Canadian ambassador to Tehran was in the courtroom one hour before the proceedings began, disproving reports that the Canadian government had summoned him to Ottawa.
Four lawyers of the plaintiff and several Iranian and foreign reporters also attended the hearing, according to IRNA. After the first court session on Kazemi’s death, the Judiciary chief established a three-member committee to study the judicial inquiry into the case of the death of Zahra Kazemi.
Kazemi was a freelance photojournalist with dual Canadian and Iranian citizenship who was working for a Canadian news media outlet at the time of her death. She was arrested in July 2003 while illegally taking pictures of Evin Prison in Tehran. She was then taken to the Intelligence Ministry, where she said she felt unwell and was subsequently taken to the hospital.
Kazemi died several days later in the hospital. Her death certificate cited a brain hemorrhage as the cause of death.
